What is BACON ?
Simply put it's: Cured meat from the sides and belly of a pig, having distinct strips of fat and typically served in thin slices.
REALLY… Bacon is so much more!
I personally think bacon is the perfect food and should be in a food group that stands alone. Something good happens when you cook this raw fatty piece of meat. Sometimes sweet, sometimes salty, and ALWAYS fatty. From the incredible smell to the perfection of the SNAP when you take that bite. It goes without saying that BACON is here to stay… !!
I found this article that I wanted to share with you… Sums up BACON to a T..! Thank you Dr. John Salerno for sharing.. !
Many agree that there’s nothing better than waking up to the sound and smell of sizzling bacon cooking. Bacon is delicious and goes great with eggs and toast in the morning. Some may go as far as saying that bacon makes everything better. Unfortunately, despite bacon’s tantalizing taste, its reputation has been tainted throughout the years. So much so, many consider bacon to be a guilty pleasure and is “taboo” if you are looking to stick to a healthy diet. But in reality, there are many health benefits of bacon, just as long as you purchase “high-quality” bacon. By high-quality we mean bacon that is uncured, contains no antibiotics or hormones, and if possible, is organic. Believe us when we tell you that eating meat from an animal that was raised humanely, pasture-raised and was fed the proper diet while it was alive, makes a HUGE difference in the taste and quality.
When purchasing bacon, make sure you read the ingredients. Look for bacon that has a natural ingredient list, which should look something like this: pork, celery powder, cane sugar, sea salt, and spices. Stay away from brands that have added nitrites, dextrose, soy lecithin, or sodium phosphate listed on its label. In this case, the price usually dictates quality, so be prepared to spend a pretty penny on high-quality bacon, but with it’s worth it! However, if you can purchase your bacon locally get it from your local farmer, there’s no better way to know exactly what is going into your food (and what went into your food), plus its fresher!
Remember, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing, so enjoy bacon in moderate portions and make sure you pair it with a healthy diet. When eaten in proper serving sizes, there are some surprising health benefits, so if you are looking to justify eating this delicious meat, read more about the health benefits of bacon!
Good Source of Omega-3’s
Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in fish, and they can help reduce your cholesterol and improve the overall health of your heart. With its Omega-3 content, bacon can have a positive benefit on your heart and body, despite the massive claims that bacon causes heart disease. If you are looking to lower your cholesterol, a serving of bacon can help raise the good numbers over time, while reducing the bad.
It’s Good for the Brain
Your brain is a vital organ, and when problems develop with the brain, the results can be devastating if it’s not managed correctly. Luckily, bacon contains choline, which is excellent for the heart and the brain. Excellent for healing abnormalities, studies have shown that choline helps reduce the rate of memory loss, and works well in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and other dementia diseases.
Natural Mood Enhancer
Eating bacon doesn’t just make you happy because it tastes delicious it makes you happy because bacon is considered to be a natural mood enhancer. Maybe it’s because bacon isn’t horrible for you, well at least not the high-quality kind, as it’s chock full of essential vitamins and minerals, is filling, and can actually help a person lose weight. What’s not to feel good about?
Stops Food Cravings
If you are looking for a way to stay full and satisfied for a good chunk of the day, whip up some bacon. Because of the fat content, the healthy fat, as well as the high levels of protein, with almost zero carbohydrates, bacon can help satiate your appetite. Without those nasty fat-building carbohydrates in the way, bacon can help you maintain your energy levels while raising one’s metabolism.

High-quality bacon is full of nutrients such as antioxidants, selenium, iron, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, zinc, thiamin, riboflavin, and is chock full of complete protein. One of our favorite meals in the Rutherford house is BLT PIZZA…When you look at the recipe, at first glance its long and daunting. But, remember the old adage: Anything good takes time/work. Come on.. IT'S A PIZZA.. there are many components, and each one takes time !!
I have to admit this was the EASIEST Foods that Heal blogs.. mostly because I shared an article that wrote about BACON better than I could have.
