What are Probiotics?

Probiotics, according to the WHO (World Health Organization), are “living microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”. The majority of these microorganisms are found in the gut, which is the foundation of the immune system and the epicenter of nutrient absorption and overall health. In humans, the organ considered to be the most diverse and the most metabolically active is the gastrointestinal tract. An integral part of an optimally functioning gastrointestinal tract is the microbial community.
