What is Metabolic Syndrome?

Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is a collection of the following symptoms involving metabolic dysfunction:

  • High triglycerides
  • Low HDL cholesterol
  • High blood sugar
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity

You might be thinking, those sound like diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia. The reality is, these are really symptoms of deeper issues. Type 2 diabetes is really late-stage insulin resistance, and both hypertension and high cholesterol are adaptations by your body to deeper issues such as inflammation and oxidative stress. What’s more, is the conventional approach to these problems is to simply throw some drugs at it.

Hypertension, as stated before, is primarily a result of oxidative stress and inflammation. It may also be in part due to nutrient deficiencies. Our goal is to help address all of these fronts when helping someone deal with their high blood pressure. Simply “artificially” reducing the elevated pressure in the arteries doesn’t address these issues which are the actual problem. It’s not the actual pressure that is a problem, if that was the case, we would warn people of doing anything strenuous, such as exercise, which can drastically increase blood pressure in the short-term.

Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, is a result of insulin resistance. The worst part of diabetic treatment, is that the worse a person with diabetes gets, it’s more likely the person will be given insulin for “management”. This is akin to trying to help someone with lactose intolerance by giving them milk. Common drugs used to manage diabetes have also been shown to deplete certain B vitamins that are also crucial for your body’s own management of glucose and insulin. They also can stress the kidneys, an organ already at risk for diabetic patients. Our goal is reducing the need for insulin through diet, as well as supporting the body’s ability to properly use insulin, improving insulin sensitivity.

Low HDL and High Triglycerides, go some what hand in hand. These are rooted in the same issues, but the difference is that while triglycerides can change quite quickly, the HDL will take a much longer time to see improvement. The majority of cases with these symptoms are due to, yet again, insulin resistance. But it can also be due to underlying inflammation, hormonal imbalances, and oxidative stress. This is why when we address MetS, we take such a multi-level approach, alongside a proper diet and lifestyle.

Obesity is determined by waist circumference, with males exceeding a waist line of 40inches, and females larger than a 35 inch waist classified as obese. Abdominal fat is known to be one of the most dangerous areas to gather fat due to its presence around our organs, known as visceral fat, which can also build up in the arteries. This then creates a high risk situation for several chronic health concerns, especially in the metabolic pathways. By reducing our body fat, we can have direct positive impacts on several of our important health markers."

Dietary Approach

Here at Destination Health, we always believe that a base of a real, whole food diet is crucial when addressing our health, especially chronic health issues like MetS. Our belief is that your diet should be rich in meats, eggs, fish, shellfish, vegetables, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and minimal fruits. A healthy diet is one rich in diversity, of both plant and animal-based foods, as well as low in carbohydrates, and for some that may even require a Ketogenic approach.

Lifestyle

Your lifestyle is as crucial to your success as what you put in your body. Managing stress, proper sleep, and including regular movement into your lifestyle will go a very long way to improving your markers of health.

Supplemental Protocol

Bio-Cardio Packs is one of the most comprehensive formulas on the market to help address overall cardiovascular health and function. It’s packed with CoQ10, a crucial nutrient for your heart, antioxidants such as Vitamins A, C, and E, amino acids required for proper function, essential fatty acids, along with an abundance of other supporting nutrients. Take 1 pack per day with food.

Lipoic Acid Plus is a fantastic antioxidant with an abundant amount of research on several markers of Metabolic Syndrome. It has also been shown to help reduce many of the common side effects from poorly managed Type 2 diabetes, such as neuropathy and eye health. Take 3 capsules daily with food. Can be in single or multiple doses.

Biomega 1000 is in our opinion, the highest quality fish oil on the market. Biotics Research went above and beyond to bring only the utmost best quality to this product. Fish oil has long been used as replacement therapy for several drugs associated with MetS. Nearly every American is deficient in adequate balance of fatty acids, primarily through a lack of EPA and DHA, the fatty acids found in this product. Take 3 capsules daily with food. Can be in single or multiple doses.

Acti-Mag Plus is quickly becoming a new favorite product for me. Packed with highly bioavailable B vitamins, magnesium, beetroot and taurine, it’s a comprehensive formula designed to help support a magnitude of underlying metabolic problems. Magnesium and taurine have been shown in studies to be a powerful nutritional support in lowering blood pressure. Beetroot helps both the function of the liver, as well as increase oxygen in the blood, lowering the need for high pressure. Take 1 scoop in water per day.

Metabolic Syndrome Kit - (The following supports a 30-day protocol, we recommend following for 3 months)
